South Terminal parking: choose the right side of the airport
South Terminal has its own Short Stay, longer-stay and handover arrangements. Do not choose a North Terminal entrance just because an online map displays “Gatwick parking”.
| Option | Terminal connection | Useful for | Booking consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short Stay, Car Parks 1–3 | Approximately four-minute covered walk | Pick-ups and trips where avoiding a bus matters | Check the chosen car park and tariff |
| Premium Short Stay | Convenient terminal-level access | Travellers prioritising the pedestrian route | Confirm the premium area and vehicle restrictions |
| Mid Stay South | Approximately six-minute walk | Pre-booked stays accepting a longer walk | Follow the current entrance instructions |
| Long Stay South | Shuttle transfer | Longer holidays and cost comparisons | Allow for waiting and the return bus |
| Valet | Specified vehicle handover | Travellers wanting less self-parking | Confirm the reception and collection process |
South Terminal Short Stay
Gatwick identifies Car Parks 1, 2 and 3 as South Terminal Short Stay. Its official guide describes a four-minute covered walk. This makes it a useful starting point for a parked collection, a brief visit or a trip where you want to keep the keys and walk.
The distance from a specific space varies. Allow time to find a bay, unload and use lifts if needed. Check vehicle height restrictions before arriving with a roof box or larger vehicle.
A parking quote for several days is not the same as the on-the-day short-visit tariff. Use the full price for your actual times rather than extrapolating from a headline hourly amount.
Premium Short Stay at South
The practical purpose of Premium is more convenient positioning and access. Gatwick describes a same-level access area at South; use the current directions for that product and do not assume every bay in the multi-storey has the same route.
If you are travelling with someone who cannot comfortably walk the standard route, check both parking and special-assistance arrangements. A Premium reservation is not itself a booking for airline assistance.
Mid Stay is now also listed for South
The supplied roadmap described Mid Stay only for North Terminal. Gatwick’s current official Mid Stay page now lists a South Terminal product, with an approximately six-minute walk.
It is pre-booked and has its own number-plate recognition and entrance instructions. The current route describes entering through the Long Stay South approach and following Mid Stay South signs. Do not interpret the shared approach as permission to park in any Long Stay zone.
Read the walking instructions, vehicle suitability and confirmation carefully. If your product does not appear in a quote for your dates, do not assume a general article establishes availability.
Long Stay South
Long Stay suits travellers comparing the value of a shuttle-based stay with parking nearer the building. Gatwick’s product page describes regular free buses and a journey of roughly ten to twelve minutes, but the actual allowance should include waiting, loading and busy-period delays.
For an early departure, confirm the current operating instructions and the amount of time your airline expects before check-in. On return, find the correct South Long Stay stop, especially if you are tired or travelling with several bags.
Check cancellation and amendment terms on the specific quote. A more expensive flexible rate and a discounted non-refundable rate are not like-for-like offers.
Valet and other handover services
Valet can reduce the need to find a self-park space, but requires you to follow a reception process and leave the keys. Check whether you are booking the official airport service or an independent operator.
Confirm storage location, permitted vehicle movements, arrival notice and delayed-return arrangements. Keep your return contact details accurate. Do not use an unauthorised kerbside meeting point because another operator’s instructions mention it.
South directions and postcode checks
Gatwick’s current Short Stay page labels South Terminal RH6 0LL, while the linked map may use a different address label. Long Stay South is listed with RH6 0NY. These are product-specific references, not interchangeable instructions.
From the M23, follow the airport approach at Junction 9 and then signs for South and your parking product. Check the current entrance map before driving; satnav accuracy can vary around neighbouring access roads.
| Parking choice | What to save before travel |
|---|---|
| Short Stay | Correct Car Park 1, 2 or 3 entrance and height limit |
| Premium | The premium area’s level and access instructions |
| Mid Stay South | The named entrance route and pedestrian path |
| Long Stay South | Arrival address and return shuttle stop |
| Valet | Handover reception, contact number and arrival notice |
South pick-up and drop-off
A parked pick-up lets you wait inside arrivals; a terminal drop-off facility is not a substitute for that. Check the current short-visit tariff if baggage reclaim or immigration may lengthen the wait.
The airport’s Long Stay information currently describes two free hours for passenger collection, subject to its conditions. Both driver and passenger should understand the shuttle journey and free-period limit. Do not assume the concession applies to Short Stay, Mid Stay or a terminal drop-off lane.
Accessibility and Blue Badge considerations
Gatwick publishes Blue Badge bays in South parking facilities. Check the specific bay-to-terminal route, lift access and vehicle limits before paying.
For a shuttle product, ask how mobility equipment is carried and how to arrange assistance. If the badge holder is flying while the car remains, confirm the process for displaying or verifying the badge. Parking concessions and airline assistance are separate arrangements.
Which option fits a South Terminal trip?
| Situation | Compare first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Meeting someone in arrivals | South Short Stay | Direct pedestrian route |
| Pre-booked short break, comfortable walking | Short Stay and Mid Stay | Compare full total and route |
| Longer stay with spare transfer time | Long Stay | Shuttle-based alternative |
| Reduced handling of luggage | Valet | Check the handover rather than assuming a walk |
| Returning to North instead | Ask the operator before booking | Cross-terminal collection may change the journey |
Practical tips
Check the airline terminal on both legs, not just the outward flight. Save the actual parking map, photograph your bay or zone, and keep the collection instructions offline. Give the return time enough allowance for baggage reclaim and read the delayed-return charges.
